Moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi: Costs, Timing and Paperwork
Dubai to Abu Dhabi is the busiest intercity moving route in the UAE, and it is also the one people most consistently over-plan. It is roughly 140 kilometres and ninety minutes on the E11 — closer to a long local move than a relocation — yet quotes and advice online often treat it like an interstate move that needs overnight storage and two days of disruption.
It does not. Loaded by mid-morning, a standard household is unloaded in Abu Dhabi the same afternoon. What actually needs your attention is not the distance — it is the paperwork on the Abu Dhabi side, which works differently from Dubai's. This guide covers the real costs, the timing that works, and the permit rules that catch people out.
What the move actually costs
These bands assume a lift-served building at both ends and include fuel, Salik and inter-emirate permits — ask any mover quoting below them what has been left out, because something has.
| Property | Typical price (AED) | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / 1 BHK | 899 – 1,400 | Same day |
| 2 BHK apartment | 1,400 – 2,200 | Same day |
| 3 BHK apartment | 2,000 – 2,900 | Same day |
| 3–4 BHK villa | 2,800 – 4,200 | Same day |
| Large villa (5+ BHK) | 4,200 – 6,500 | 1–2 days |
| Office (10–20 desks) | 3,500 – 7,000 | Weekend |
Why it is a same-day move
The E11 run is about ninety minutes outside peak. A typical schedule looks like this: crew arrives at 8am, loading completes by 11–12, transit lands in Abu Dhabi by 1:30pm, and unloading plus reassembly finishes between 4 and 6pm. One crew and one vehicle the whole way — nothing transferred between trucks or depots, which is where damage and 'lost box' problems usually enter an intercity move.
The timing detail that matters is departure. Leaving Dubai between 6:30 and 8:30am puts the truck into the worst of the E11 commuter flow; loading first and transiting late morning avoids it entirely. A good mover plans this for you — it is worth asking how they schedule the route, because the answer tells you whether they run it regularly.
Abu Dhabi buildings work differently
Dubai residents are used to the NOC-and-lift-booking routine. Abu Dhabi adds a layer: towers on Al Reem Island, Al Maryah Island and Saadiyat commonly require a municipality-approved moving permit alongside the building's own approval, and Corniche-area loading zones are tightly time-limited.
- Al Reem / Al Maryah / Saadiyat towers: municipality moving permit + building NOC + reserved service lift. Allow three to five working days.
- Corniche buildings: short permitted standing times for trucks — the crew stages the unload so the vehicle keeps moving.
- Khalifa City, MBZ City, Al Raha villas: straightforward driveway access, usually no permit beyond community gate clearance.
- Yas Island: community management approval for commercial vehicles, arranged in advance.
The admin to run in parallel
- Serve notice on your Dubai tenancy (usually 90 days) and book the move-out inspection.
- Register the Abu Dhabi tenancy on Tawtheeq — Abu Dhabi's equivalent of Ejari, and required for utilities.
- Open an ADDC account for the new property and schedule DEWA closure for the day after the move.
- Transfer or re-register internet — provider availability differs between the emirates, so check before assuming your plan moves with you.
- Update your registered address with your employer, bank, insurer and the traffic department.
One-way logistics people forget
- Book the Dubai service lift for the morning and the Abu Dhabi lift for the afternoon — two buildings, two bookings, one day.
- Keep documents, jewellery, medication and laptops in your own car, not on the truck.
- If the new property is not ready, storage in Dubai with redelivery to Abu Dhabi is usually cheaper than storage in Abu Dhabi — compare both before deciding.
- Petrol-station stops with a loaded truck are avoidable: a mover who fuels before loading is a mover who has done this before.

Frequently asked questions
How long does moving from Dubai to Abu Dhabi take?
One day for standard household volumes. Loading takes the morning, the E11 transit is around ninety minutes, and unloading with reassembly finishes the same afternoon. Only very large villas are scheduled across two days, and a good mover tells you that at quotation stage.
Do I need a permit to move into an Abu Dhabi tower?
On the islands, usually yes. Al Reem, Al Maryah and Saadiyat towers commonly require a municipality-approved moving permit in addition to the building's NOC and a reserved service lift. Allow three to five working days, and use a mover who files the paperwork before departure rather than discovering it at the door.
Is it cheaper to move to Abu Dhabi mid-month?
Yes, for the same reason as any UAE move: tenancy contracts cluster on month boundaries, so the final week of every month is peak demand on this route. A mid-month date gets better availability and, at most companies, a better price for identical work.
